All sin involves placing ourselves at the center of the universe. Therefore, repentance requires that we unseat ourselves. Repentant people first open their hearts to the word of God, then allow their feet to take the requisite steps. The Hebrew prophets and Jesus often warn of a false repentance that enters into external rituals without a conversion of the heart. Repentance begins within (re-placing God at the center), then expresses itself externally (new behavior, religious rituals).
