Our state legislature’s decision to allow multiple suburban school districts closes the latest chapter in a tragic story that precedes Brown vs. Board of Education. If we’re ever to achieve the just goal of equal educational opportunity for all children, we’ll have to move beyond self-interest and overcome our long legacy of distrust.
Separating into multiple districts is a failure of vision, courage, and, most importantly, love. We had a once-in-a-generation opportunity to undue some of the educational injustices of the 1970s. Instead, we opted to widen the distance that separates us.
