My hope for this legislation is that it will demonstrate the thoroughness of our democratic process with all its necessary checks and balances of power between our three branches of government. Our elected legislators hammer out policies that must survive the scrutiny of the judiciary before being enacted by officers of the executive branch.
Those who favor or abhor this particular policy have many places to voice their opinion. Regardless of the outcome, our process encourages legal fairness. I am concerned that good people on both sides are being demonized by their opposition.
There are many fine people in the suburbs who see local schools as the best option for educating children, and they are wrongly caricatured as fearful racists. There are also many fine people in the city who are shamefully cast as corrupt malingerers. Demonizing your opposition frees you from attempting to see the issue from their point of view and thereby acknowledging its legitimacy.
