Faith informs my view in two ways. First, it tells me to have compassion, especially in areas of relationships and reproduction. To be quickly judgmental and confrontational does more damage than good. Second, faith, combined with a correct doctrine of creation, provides the vocabulary to describe the goodness, wonder, and mystery of life. The first thing an expectant mother or father says upon looking at an ultrasound of a mother’s pregnant womb is not: “Oh, look! There’s beautiful fertilized egg that became a zygote that developed into an embryo that has now become a fetus.” The vocabulary of biology, which I very much appreciate, must be accompanied and informed by what theological vocabulary names as a life created in and possessive of the image of God.
