Where None are gathered

With the Gallop organization’s recent release of their study, “Nones on the Rise,” the United States experienced a first in its 230-plus years of being.
For the first time in our history there is not a Protestant majority.  The so-called “nones” now form the world’s third largest religion.  Yes, here in the land of the free, we see many of our neighbors exercising their freedom of worship by not worshiping, by not showing up.  Often there is talk of being spiritual but not religious among those in this ever-growing group.

My conviction is that the Church is called to be both spiritual and religious. Religious organizations bear an inherent responsibility to nurture spiritual disciplines among its adherents. But the richness of our spirituality is best realized in community. To be engaged in the spiritual life calls for commitment to that which is bigger than ourselves alone.
