From Misery to Miracle

December 10, 2012 in Featured Question of the Week by Chris Altrock

“You have the power to change someone’s life from misery to miracle.”

One thing that made me thankful to live in Memphis in 2012 was the Agape Heartlight event at which Maya Angelou spoke this line.  On Aug. 25, Dr. Angelou testified at the Cannon Center in downtown Memphis about individuals who had turned her own life from misery to miracle.  “Rainbows in the clouds” she called them.  Then she challenged the many gathered to go and do likewise.

Her story and statement reminded me of the many faith groups and organizations in Memphis seeking to do this very thing.  More importantly, it reminded me of the many individuals doing this in their day-to-day lives.  Rarely applauded and often unsung, the city is full of heroes whose simple and sacrificial service eases the load burdening the shoulders of many.

Few places have tasted misery like Memphis.  Yet few places experience miracles like Memphis.

And for those of you making this possible, I give thanks.
