What should we – individually and collectively – be doing differently about hunger issues in our community?
During the election there was great emphasis on the middle class. What was rarely mentioned was “the poor.” America has the best dressed poor people in the world thanks to thrift shops. No one truly starves because of soup kitchens. No one is totally without health care because of emergency rooms. When the hurricane hits FEMA eventually shows up. But people will not emerge from poverty through assistance delivered in a crisis. Hunger creates desperation and hopelessness. I don’t know about the rest of America but we in Memphis should set aside our differences and declare that no child will go to bed hungry in our city. This is not a government problem it is a matter of moral will.
