My own backyard church

Which Memphis-area house of worship do you find most beautiful, spiritual, sacred? And why?
I have a special regard for St. Mary’s Episcopal on Poplar, as the Rhodes Singers’ Christmas performances in that space the past couple of years have touched transcendence. And I have a sense of reverence about St. John’s Orthodox near my house in Midtown. It’s not an especially large or architecturally imposing building, but its shape and ritual life generate a sanctity that really seizes my sensibilities.
Maybe once my son and I finish building the skateboard ramp, I’ll turn my attention to building a church of my own in my backyard. Because, surely, a sacred space — in its design, form, and function — is an imaginative expression of an individual’s own encounter with the world. I’ve already selected a plan for a timber-frame outhouse that might be adapted smartly for the purpose.
