A fixable moral failure

What should we – individually and collectively – be doing differently about hunger issues in our community?
Hunger realities in our nation, and Shelby County specifically, speak to a “fixable,” moral failure of our faith community. It also reveals a canyon in the ethical practices of many food wholesale, retail and restaurant businesses.
Over thirty years ago, as a WHBQ-TV employee, I initiated the first firehouse food drive, that we sponsored with food bank cooperation and other corporate support. Now a board member of Mid-South Food Bank, I see greater need, as tons of edible food go to dumpsters and compost bins daily.
Food is a basic human need! We must work collectively to change public policies and food handling practices that deny hungry people food to survive. I was motivated to contact more food suppliers for gleaning privileges.
