Solution in search of a problem

August 17, 2012 in Are you concerned about new voter ID laws?, Featured Question of the Week, Question of the Week by Aaron Rubinstein

Are you concerned about new voter ID laws? Are we doing enough to prevent fraud and other problems? How can we make voting as accessible as possible while still safeguarding the democratic process?

Researchers have repeatedly looked into evidence of in-person voter fraud and have concluded that voter fraud is between exceedingly rare and non-existent. These tough new laws which add new requirements are – at best – solutions in search of a problem. Because they add unreasonable hurdles to voting they are clearly unethical. Regardless of the intent behind the laws, these laws serve to suppress voter participation. The integrity of our democracy is not served by these initiatives.
