Poll tax in disguise

August 17, 2012 in Are you concerned about new voter ID laws?, Question of the Week, Spotlight Answers by Steve Montgomery

Are you concerned about new voter ID laws? Are we doing enough to prevent fraud and other problems? How can we make voting as accessible as possible while still safeguarding the democratic process?

The new voter registration laws popping up around the country are nothing but a 21st century version of a poll tax designed to keep the vote suppressed among certain groups. I would view this differently if indeed voter fraud were a significant problem, but such instances are exceedingly rare (as in Tennessee) and virtually non-existent in some states that are advocating this (as in Pennsylvania). One wishes the legislatures would be spending their time ensuring a smooth electoral process in places like Florida and Shelby County, and doing all they could to encourage a strong turnout for all citizens. The right to vote is the most precious of all of our Constitutionally-imbedded rights, but that appears to be too much of a threat to some.
