Apathy is the real problem

August 17, 2012 in Are you concerned about new voter ID laws?, Question of the Week, Spotlight Answers by David E. Leavell

Are you concerned about new voter ID laws? Are we doing enough to prevent fraud and other problems? How can we make voting as accessible as possible while still safeguarding the democratic process?

If voting is a privilege and a responsibility, what is wrong with the responsibility of proper identification before you vote? Easing requirements won’t necessarily lead to greater participation. Apathy seems to be the real problem. An educated, motivated, and informed electorate can only come from a community that cares enough to be involved in the democratic process. This includes proper identification, understanding the candidates and issues, and actually voting when the polls open.
