Learning to ask the correct questions

July 27, 2012 in Question of the Week, Reflections on the movie theater massacre in Aurora, Colo., Spotlight Answers by Rick Donlon

This week the Faith in Memphis panel reflects on the movie theater massacre in Aurora, Colo.

We ask the wrong questions when confronted with evil human behavior, disease, or a deadly natural disaster: “Where was God? If He’s all-good and all-powerful, why did He allow this to happen?”

The correct question is “How long before God removes all evil and the things that cause sin? How long until we see a new heaven and earth without suffering, and death?”

Our present world is broken and decaying, and it’s not God’s fault. Angelic and human rebellion, ancient and present, is the cause of this curse. Sin and death have soiled every atom of human existence. No amount of moral effort, religious practice, or political reform can remove the curse.

Our only hope is in the God of Israel and His Christ. For those with faith, Jesus’ death removed the guilt of rebellion and His resurrection guaranteed the death of death. The curse’s grip has been broken and we expectantly await the King’s return. At that time all people will see the justice and power of God, whether they want to or not.
