A voice in the wilderness

July 27, 2012 in Question of the Week, Reflections on the movie theater massacre in Aurora, Colo., Spotlight Answers by Nicholas Vieron

This week the Faith in Memphis panel reflects on the movie theater massacre in Aurora, Colo.

I join the many clergy who will offer words of comfort at this holy tragic hour. However, I also wish to raise “my voice in the wilderness” and state this: To be free to carry assault weapons of mass destruction and be able to legally obtain thousands of rounds of ammunition without raising a red flag, may be a sin in itself. Unfortunately, the powerful NRA makes it difficult for many to raise their voices. We are all well aware of the 2nd Amendment which, the way it is interpreted, in my humble opinion, may be obsolete. Therefore, as a priest, I will simply light a candle before the Icon of Our Lord and offer a prayer for those whose lives were touched by this tragedy that their hearts be again filled with solace and comfort and eventually with forgiveness.
