‘Adult entertaiment district’ is not progress

June 8, 2012 in Is creating an 'adult entertainment district' for strip clubs and other sex-oriented businesses a good idea?, Question of the Week, Spotlight Answers by Nicholas Vieron

Memphis City Council member Shea Flinn wants the the city to study the idea of creating an ‘adult entertainment district’ for strip clubs and other sex-oriented businesses. He wants a committee to look into a possible location as well as answer the question whether “this is the right thing to do.”

Is it the right thing to do? Why or why not?

My hometown, New Orleans, has gotten a bum rap all these years for being a party town. The French Quarter, for instance, is like a slice of Europe, except for one street — Bourbon — which locals seldom patronize. But Memphis is not a tourist mecca in the same sense as the Crescent City and an “adult entertainment district” — even the name turns me off! — would simply be a bad influence, especially for our youth. I hope it does not come to pass in the name of “progress.” Let Memphis continue to be known for our St. Jude Hospital, our great Medical Center, International Paper, FedEx, Holiday Inn, Beale Street, The Memphis Zoo, our schools of higher learning, the Tigers and the Grizzles, our sacred places of worship and, of course, the home of Elvis!
